Editing services for authors include the following:
Grammar, punctuation, continuity
Structure (both sentence and paragraph)
I make sure that the flow of your writing is both fluid and also makes sense. That's the most important part! As an author, I know how easy it is to write and have things make ALL the sense in the world to you, but to a reader, it makes none at all. I am a fresh pair of eyes. If I have to stop and read it twice, or more, then it needs to be fixed, and I do that for you.
I NEVER make changes that you don't know about. Even adding a simple missing comma or period. I will fix one of two ways:
If the correction is small, I will fix it myself and you can see the changes due to 'Track Changes.'
If the sentence(s) need a total overhaul, I will place a comment on the right side of the page telling you WHY it needs changed, followed by my suggestion. This way, you are free to re-work it however you like, but you have a good idea where to start.
I use 'Track Changes', as mentioned above, as well as insert comments for you to see exactly what has been changed and why.
I give lots of encouragement and feedback in the comments section on your work. It's important for you to know that while someone is picking through your work, that it's a GOOD thing. This is just something I do because I know when someone is super serious while editing my work that I feel a bit nervous about it. "Well, was it any good?" You won't have to worry about that with me.
I always keep you updated.
If editing is moving slowly because there are a lot of mistakes, I will tell you.
If I have an emergency situation, or if I get very sick and cannot work, I will tell you.
I keep you updated and you will never wonder where your MS is. I hear stories of a lot of editors going days or even a full week or longer without talking to the author. That is not a situation you will run into.
Even if I have no real news, I will still update you. It's important that you know what is happening.
The price is set per word. That price does not change no matter the size of the document. This also ensures that the price that I give you doesn't change by the way it's formatted (ie. the font size/spacing).
The only situation where that would ever be flexible is if I am spending countless hours on it. As I mentioned before, I will keep you well informed. If this is something that happens, I will send you the MS and show you why it is taking so long. I would never ask for more money without showing you exactly why you are being asked.
As an editor, it is my job to edit. So, if you have more than five mistakes on a page, that's fine! That's what I'm here for! If I am spending forty-five minutes to an hour on a single page, then we have to discuss the possibility that more payment is needed. Mostly because I will have to turn away another author's work, or ask for an extension due to extra time on yours.
If you are curious about my work and would like to talk to another author that has worked with me in the past, I can give you references. That is not a problem! I'd love for you to get an idea of what to expect from someone that has been in your shoes. This is YOUR money... It's OKAY that you want to make sure you're spending it wisely!
I will actually refuse to take a job without doing a sample. Sure! I'd LOVE for you to hand over your MS to me and just tell me to go for it! But... That's not how GOOD business is done.
Before we agree to work with one another, I would like for you to send me a TEN PAGE SAMPLE. I will edit this and send it back to you. I need to get an idea for what is normal for you in terms of mistakes, structure, etc.
You need to get an idea of what to expect from me in terms of corrections, my style of editing, and the way that I do comments, etc. The sample is a good thing!
IF you decide to hire me, the way that I like to do business is 50% payment up front, 50% once it is finished and safely back in your hands.
Normal Cost per WORD: $0.0085
Extensive Editing Cost per WORD: $0.0095
50% Payment up front based on size of the document sent via PayPal.
